Celebrate National Bratwurst Day with These Simple Tips

National Bratwurst Day is coming up on August 16th, and we think that’s a holiday worth celebrating. Here are some tips on how to do it up right.

Serve Fletcher’s Redhook Beer Bratwurst

Everyone knows that the best way to cook brats is to boil them in beer before grilling. Even people that don’t love beer love their brats done this way thanks to the robust flavor and juiciness of the meat. But we’ve partnered with Redhook to make amazing bratwurst even easier – the beer is already in the brat! Choose from our ready-to-grill fresh beer bratwurst or make it easier than ever with our fully cooked bratwurst sausage with beer.

Customize Your Toppings

If you’re a purist, you might disagree with the idea that anything besides stone-ground mustard should top your bratwurst. But if you’re ready to try something new, give it a go with one of these topping ideas:

  • Relish
  • Sauerkraut
  • Caramelized Onions
  • Cheese sauce
  • Marinara + mozzarella
  • Salsa + guac
  • Grilled pineapple + red onions
  • Chili + cheddar cheese
  • Cole slaw
  • Crushed potato chips

And if you’re really feeling rebellious, squeeze a little ketchup on your ‘dog. But beware – you may incite the wrath of those who feel that ketchup has no place on a bratwurst!

Get Creative With Your Bratwurst

You don’t have to limit your customization to the toppings. You can stuff your brats with things like cheese and jalapeno, or wrap them in bacon before grilling. But be advised we don’t recommend stuffing the fresh bratwurst as that might cause the juices to be released and make it more difficult to cook through. If you want to stuff your brats, opt for the fully-cooked versions.

Choose the Right Bun for the Job

After you’ve put so much thought into your bratwurst, you don’t want to serve it on a soft, soggy bun. You want to make sure you have a respectable vehicle for your masterpiece – select one that’s big enough to support your sausage and toppings. Skip the buns that are marketed for hot dogs, and choose outdoor rolls instead. And by all means – make sure to toast them on the grill to give them that extra firmness and crunch.
